Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) measures the ability of non-native English-speaking people to use English in everyday work activities. The TOEIC was developed by the ETS (Educational Testing Service) in North America following a request from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry (MITI). There are an estimated 4.5 million test takers per year, making TOEIC the most-taken English test in the world.
The TOEIC test is a two-hour no-break multiple-choice test that consists of 200 questions divided into 100 questions each in listening comprehension (45minutes) and reading comprehension (75 minutes). Each candidate receives independent marks for written and oral comprehension on a scale from 5 to 495 points. The total score adds up to a scale from 10 and 990 points. The TOEIC certificate exists in five colours, corresponding to achieved results: orange (10-215), brown (220-465), green (470-725), blue (730-855) and gold (860-990). The test is a multiple-choice, paper-and-pencil assessment.
In many countries around the business world, most notably in Asia, TOEIC is the standard by which English is measured.
At Excel the TOEIC test is administered on Saturdays every 4 weeks from 11am to 1pm
( dates are announced at the beginning of the year at the school and subject to minor adjustment for holidays ).

Speaking and Writing Test:
ETS is introducing a Speaking and Writing test in Spring 2007. This test is delivered via computer and is offered separate dates fro the paper-based Listening and Reading test. Test-takers will be able to choose whether they wish to take one test (Listening and Reading) or both tests (Listening and Reading, Speaking and Writing).
Now, let take a closer look at the new TOEIC Speaking & Writing tests:
The TOEIC Speaking Test is designed to measure the ability to communicatye in spoken English in the context of the international workplace. The test is composed of eleven tasks and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The test is designed to provide information about the English language ability of speakers across a range of language p;roficiency levels. The tasks are orginzed to support three claims:
1. The test taker can generate language intelligible to native and proficient non-native English speakers.
2. The test taker can select apporpriate language to carry out routine social and occupational interactions (such as giving and receiving directions, asking for information, asking for clarification, making purshaes, greetings and introductions, etc.)
3. The test taker can create connected, sustained discourse appropriate to the typical workplace.
There are 10 questions covering different tasks the test taker will receive and overall score based on the following criteria: Pronunciation, intonation and stress, grammar, vocabulary, cohesion, relevance of content, completensess of content.
The TOEIC Writing Test is designed to measure the ability to use written English to perform communication tasks that are typical to the international workp;lace. The test is composed of 8 tasks and takes approximately one hour to complete. As with the TOEIC Speaking Test, the range of ability amoung English learners who will take the TOEIC Writing Test is expected to be broad. The test is designed to provide information about the writing ability of test takers across a range of language proficiency levels. The tasks are organized to support the following three claims about test-taker performance:
1. The test taker can p;roduce well-formed sentences including subordination).
2. The test taker can produce multi-sentence-length text to convey straightforward information, question, instructions, narratives, etc.
3. The test taker can produce muti-paragraph-length text to express complex ideas, using, as appropriate, reasons, evidence, and extended explanations.

The TOEIC has been redesigned to be a more authentic assessment of the test-taker's English-language proficiency. The new version of test will be available in our institute in September 2007.
Key changes to the Listening section:
-
The number of photo items is being reduced to allow for other types of tasks.
-
Questions will contain some listening passages that are longer than those on the existing test.
-
In the Short Conversations section, there will be three questions per conversation instead of one. The number of conversations has been reduced from 30 to 10 in the new test.
-
Canadian voices are being included on the audiotape. U.S.,British and Australian accents also will be heard on the test.
Key changes to the Reading section:
-
In the sentence-completion section, selected items will be passage based, allowing for the testing of context-related skills.
-
In selected parts of Part VII, the test-taker will have to read two related passages and answer questions about them. Single-passage items also have been changed, with some of them being made a little longer.
-
Error-recognition items will be eliminated. Current language acquisition theories do not place much emphasis on making corrections to errors in sentences.
